About Cybele

Cybele is a non-profit evidence-based platform developed at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) that provides healthcare professionals and families with reliable, up-to-date information about medication safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Our database compiles, evaluates, and synthesises existing scientific guidelines and research to give you clear, actionable information you can trust.

Cybele is designed primarily for healthcare providers — including physicians, pharmacists, midwives, and nurses — who need quick, reliable guidance when prescribing or dispensing medications to pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Parents and patients are also welcome to use Cybele as an educational resource, but we recommend always discussing any medication-related questions with your healthcare provider.

Yes. All information on Cybele is free to access. Cybele is a non-profit initiative and relies entirely on donations and institutional support to continue its work.

Content may be freely reproduced for educational and non-profit purposes within Belgium, provided proper attribution to Cybele and VUB is given.

Cybele aims to update its medication database on a regular, ongoing basis as new evidence emerges, guidelines are revised, or new medications become available. Our expert team continuously monitors scientific literature and regulatory updates.

Medication Database

Go to the Medication Database page and type the medication name or active ingredient into the search field. Results update automatically as you type.

You can search by:

  • Generic name (e.g., paracetamol)
  • Active ingredient (e.g., amoxicillin)
  • Therapeutic class (e.g., NSAID)

The pregnancy safety categories are adapted from the international classification system and provide a quick-reference risk assessment:

  • A Category A — Adequate studies show no risk to the foetus. Generally safe.
  • B Category B — Animal studies show no risk; no adequate human studies, or animal studies show adverse effects not confirmed in human studies.
  • C Category C — Animal studies show adverse effects; no adequate human studies. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk.
  • D Category D — Evidence of human foetal risk, but potential benefits may warrant use in pregnant women despite risks.
  • X Category X — Studies show foetal abnormalities; risks clearly outweigh any possible benefit. Contraindicated in pregnancy.

For a full explanation, see our Medication Safety Ratings page.

If you cannot find a medication in our database, it may not yet have been added or evaluated. You can:

  • Try searching by the active ingredient rather than the brand name
  • Check the legacy Cybele database which may contain additional entries
  • Contact us to request that a specific medication be added

Yes. Each medication entry in the Cybele database includes both pregnancy and breastfeeding safety information where available. Our Breastfeeding Hub also provides curated guidelines for treating common conditions during lactation.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Hubs

The Pregnancy Hub is a curated portal that brings together existing, recognised clinical guidelines for common conditions and symptoms that arise during pregnancy — organised by trimester and condition type.

It gives healthcare providers quick access to the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatment advice in a single location.

The Breastfeeding Hub compiles existing national and international guidelines for treating illnesses and symptoms during breastfeeding. Each entry includes practical treatment advice and safety considerations for both mother and infant.

No. Cybele compiles, evaluates, and curates existing guidelines from recognised national and international health authorities and scientific bodies. We do not create primary guidelines ourselves.

Our added value is in synthesising and making these guidelines easily accessible in a single, consistent format. Read more about Cybele's working method.
